What We Like

[ last updated 12/01 ] There is much to like here -- including the following...

We Really Like... Because...
Thunderbirds Coming back this fall...
Wallace and Gromit Great grown-up animation
Bob the Builder Great little kid animation
Somersets Shaving Oil for Men This is the balm. Absolutely the greatest advance in shaving since the introduction of water. 3 drops per shave. Fantastic.
Walking and biking. It is easy to do and the scenery is great. Also, we have no car.
The Market in the city centre. The fruits, veggies, meat and fish are all good.
The beer. It is fresh and tasty.
The bread. Same reason.
The civilised pace. Very sane.
Bacon Lean and delicious--this is nothing like the narrow fatty stuff back home.
The train service. It has worked well for us -- seems you can go nearly anywhere, and the cost is reasonable.
Tomato and olive pesto. How did we get by without this in the States? Mental note: inform Fresh Fields...
Baguette sandwiches, pasty Great bread, great fillings like cheese and onion, egg salad and bacon. Also, the pasty (flaky crust around a savoury filling) is a fantastic contribution to mid-day eating.
The cheese Great variety.
Oatcakes Plain, dry and oat-y: the perfect substrate for cheese.
Flapjacks These are sort of an oat brownie -- not too sweet, really tasty, and probably good for you.
Strange sports on TV Snooker (pronounced "SNEW-ka") and bowls (which is like bocce). You've got to see it to believe it. If we had a Snooker Channel on cable in the US, I would buy it. (The 2001 UK Championship was held in York - missed it!) There is a bowls field at the end of our street, so I hope to be able to watch it in the warm weather...
Eccles cakes Pancake-size, crumbly, stuffed with raisins or dates. Yummy.
Humor on TV League of Gentlemen & Jam (for some of us, anyway), even Smack the Pony
Commercials on TV They are often very funny.
