Walk around Kilburn

Mary Ellen and I jumped in the car and headed for Pen-y-ghent. Unfortunately, in my haste to get on the way I left some equipment behind--compass, water, hiking boots. Halfway through our drive we went back home, then set out for Kilburn, an hour closer to home. Kilburn is the site of the famous White Horse, a 150ft chalk figure drawn on the side of a hill. On a clear day it is visible from atop the York Minster.

Our route took us along the top of a cliff, past the White Horse Figure, then down through woods and farms to a lake, then on through more woods and farms to a climb back up the cliffs and another walk along the top. The weather was a little hazy, so while the clifftop view was great, the pictures were not.

After the start along the cliff top, the path descended through woods and in places got very muddy--"A bit sticky" as a fellow walker put it. The woods had a spooky look, and we could have been lost in Maryland.

Luckily, the profusion of plants kept us from thinking too much about the muck.
