Old News, 1998

12/18/98 - Good luck to brother Kevin, who is headed to the Middle East. We're looking forward to lots of out-of-town visitors over the next week or so. The Big Dig is done. Our front yard trench has been replaced with a lovely earthen mound, covered by straw. Just like Martha Stewart would do it.

12/10/98 - The Big Dig... The remaining piece of polybutylene pipe in our water system, which ran from the street to our basement, gave up the ghost. We now have an all new, all copper line. We also have a 70 foot long trench in the front yard.

11/22/98 - On Friday the kids had their Thanksgiving Feast at school. All week they helped prepare the food -- turkey, corn, sweet potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, cornbread, butter, and pumpkin pie. They did a great job! This weekend we visited the playground and ran around in the cool air and sunshine. We also made a big pile of leaves on the lawn--it wasn't a big pile for long.

11/19/98 - Pam came down for a quick visit and the kids were on their best manic behavior. We had a fun visit with Mom-mom and Diane.

11/1/98 - Playing together... This morning, in a few moments of parental inattention, Little Brother decided he would like to open the refrigerator door and help himself to a pudding. Which he did. He turned to Big Sister for help in getting a spoon. Which she did. Unfortunately for Little Brother, his cleaning up skills are not as keen his foraging skills, and we found the evidence: a chocolate-smeared face, a spoon and an empty pudding cup. It is so nice when they play together...

10/24-25 - We went to the Zoo for the annual Halloween parade. The kids walk around in costumes, have cookies and see a performance. The Fairy Godmother and the Clown went with their cousin, the Dragon. On Sunday, we took advantage of the nice weather and went into town to the Museum of Natural History. We saw a lot of dinosaur bones--pretty cool. We also saw some of the Marine Corps Marathon and we noticed that the scaffolding has started to creep up the Washington Monument.

10/16-17 - Email from Germany about the pictures here. Danke, Elfriede...  We visited a farm to see the animals and to pick apples and pumpkins. Little brother discovered that apples are shaped like baseballs, and can be thrown. Big sister discovered that pumpkins look like basketballs, but don't bounce...

10/14 - The Big Kids had a great time in Jamaica for an extra long weekend to celebrate 10 years of blissful matrimony. See Pictures today and in the coming weeks for photos of the flowers, water, rum drinks, etc.

9/16 - Even more vacation images in Pictures. It looks like the grownups will get a long weekend in the sun soon. Finally!

9/6 -- See Pictures for some more vacation shots...

8/26 -- Our summer vacation can be summed up in two words: mandatory evacuation. Sunday evening was nice. Monday was beautiful. Tuesday late afternoon we left for home. Next year, we try for July. Hmmm.

8/5 -- Diane is visiting this week. We're happy she's here and the kids are having fun with their big cousin.

7/24 -- New pictures from June and July. We had a great time visiting with Andy and Lynn and Ethan and Ronit over the July 4 weekend.

6/28 -- Kevin came down for a visit. The kids loved it.

6/20 -- We're back. The move was fine. Aside from the now comical mishaps of getting accidentally locked out of the house and the sink backing up on day 3, all was well. We still have several packed boxes around, and every weekend we're usually balancing trying to get inside stuff and yard work stuff done. The kids love the house, especially the back yard and the swing set. Mom Mom visited a couple of weeks ago, and Uncle Kevin will visit in a couple of weeks.

The WWW is world wide: We received a very nice email from Sonja Koegler, a (second?) cousin in Australia -- she received the email address from her Oma (also in Australia), who received a paper version of the K-O-Cam pages downloaded and printed by Elfriede in Germany. Whew.

We went to the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus on 4/19—the kids had a great time. We had so much fun watching them watch the show (and eat pretzels and sno-cones) that we forgot to take photos.

Old News, 1997

The Christmas holidays in 1997 were happy, hectic and sad. We had lots of visiting relatives around for Christmas and days following, and the kids had a great time with gifts and cousins. We missed my father, Vincent Kavanagh, who died 14 December, 1997 at age 81.
